Oscar and Golden Globe-winning actress Reese Witherspoon made her mark as a smart, driven and self-respecting actress who refused to take the easy road to stardom with mindless teen flicks and broad comedies. Her sturdy Southern upbringing by an academic family was evident in the focus and confidence she brought to her first starring film role at the age of 14. Uncommon comedic talent paired with her high energy and charismatic spirit first caught critical notice in 1996's indie cult hit "Election," and by 2001, she assumed the role of one of the few leading ladies who could open a film with her delightfully cheeky turn in "Legally Blonde." Her commitment to "real" women characters rendered the occasional lackluster comedy like "Sweet Home Alabama" (2002) watchable, but Witherspoon proved herself to be a serious dramatic contender with her overwhelmingly acclaimed portrayal of June Carter Cash in "Walk the Line" (2004), for which she won a much deserved Oscar. Off-screen, her marriage to fellow actor Ryan Phillippe seemed to echo the perfection of all other aspects of her world, but the couple shocked the public in 2006 when – after two children and many years together, by Hollywood standards - they separated amidst rumors of his infidelity. Ever the fighter and self-professed type-A personality, Witherspoon picked up the pieces with class and discretion, and continued on with her highly bankable career. Reese Witherspoon was born on March 22, 1976, in New Orleans, LA. Her mother was a professor with numerous degrees, including a PhD in pediatric nursing, while her father was a surgeon as well as a lieutenant in the Army Reserves. His military post led the family to relocate to Weisbaden, Germany, shortly after Witherspoon was born. She spent her infancy overseas before the family returned to the United States and settled in Nashville, TN. The youngest of two kids as well as the only daughter, Witherspoon was bookish and ambitious, simultaneously planning to go into medicine like her parents, but also telling the girls in the schoolyard at the private Harding Academy that she was going to be the next Dolly Parton. A family friend recruited the perky blonde for a local TV commercial when she was seven; thus marking the humble beginnings of the girl who would one day find herself among the highest paid actresses in Hollywood. Inspired by her brush with local fame, Witherspoon began taking acting lessons, and when she was 11 years old, took first place in a multi-state talent competition. For the next several years, Witherspoon maintained her focus on schoolwork and cheerleading, as well as absorbing her traditional Southern upbringing, which she would later credit with her strong work ethic and sense of responsibility. Reese Witherspoon Wallpaper 4. Her accomplished mother and grandmother instilled self-respect and high moral standards, which probably came in handy sooner than expected when their 14- year-old daughter inadvertently landed the lead role in a Hollywood film. Witherspoon and some friends attended a casting call for "The Man in the Moon" in 1990 when they heard the film that was being shot locally. The best they hoped for was to have some fun as extras, but casting agents immediately zeroed in on Witherspoon, who was selected to fly to Los Angeles for further auditions. The inexperienced actress gave a shining performance on her first time out, playing with heartbreaking poignancy, a 14-year-old girl in love with her sister's boyfriend-next-door. It was immediately apparent from her performance that she could handle three-dimensional, passionate characters with both manners and moxie. The girl whose parents had nicknamed her "Little Miss Type A" for her driven and multi-tasking personality followed up with the Diane Keaton-directed cable movie "Wildflower" (Lifetime, 1991), playing a girl who discovers an epileptic teenager (Patricia Arquette) held captive by her father. She held down a fairly regular school schedule at the private girls' school Harpeth Hall, while racking up television credits as a critically ill young woman in "Desperate Choices: To Save My Child" (NBC, 1992) and as a young wife with a wandering eye in the miniseries "Return to Lonesome Dove" (CBS, 1993). That same year, she evaded murderous poachers as the star of "A Far Off Place," a teen-aimed Disney adventure filmed in the Kalahari Desert. Witherspoon graduated from high school in 1994 and entered the prestigious Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA, with her sights set on a degree in English Literature. But after only a year, acting tugged her down to Los Angeles where directors were lining up to cast the little firecracker. Witherspoon delivered a breakthrough turn as a sensitive and sassy hostage in the controversial Gen-X satire "S.F.W." (1995) which signaled her move toward more risky, complex roles. She was stalked by a pre-"Boogie Nights" Mark Wahlberg in James Foley's "Fear" (1996), and kissed her nice girl image good-bye in "Freeway" (1996), where she played a gun-toting, trash-mouthed juvenile delinquent, snarling and pouting her way through a modern-day "Little Red Riding Hood." Reese Witherspoon Wallpaper 4. Developing a varied and rewarding career seemed to come naturally to the young actress, who held the lessons taught by her mother and grandmother to heart, avoiding roles that catered to dumbed down female teen stereotypes. After she portrayed the wayward daughter of Susan Sarandon and Gene Hackman in "Twilight" (1998), her all-American fresh-scrubbed look and pert demeanor found its way into Gary Ross' "Pleasantville" (1998), where she and Tobey Maguire starred as 1990s teens who travel back in time to introduce a bold new life force to a 1950s black-and-white world. By the time those films hit theaters, Witherspoon had a bold new force in her own life, having met up-and-coming actor Ryan Phillippe at her 21st birthday party in the spring of 1997. The couple was an instant item and became engaged in late 1998.

Reese Witherspoon Wallpaper 3 has still not officially announced her pregnancy yet - although her growing bump is doing all the talking. As Reese Witherspoon prepared to depart LAX yesterday, there was no doubt that the Oscar winner was with child as her tight, clingy grey top could not hide her growing baby bump. However, once safely inside of the terminal, the 36-year-old made sure to cover it by buttoning up her stylish brown leather jacket with ruffled sides over her light blue jeans and pirate booties. The glowing mother-of-two, who is expecting her third child with new husband Jim Toth, carried a white canvas bag with brown trim and kept her neck warm in a black scarf with sequins. Looking happy to get out of Los Angeles, Reese definitely has plenty to smile about these days. On a visit to a new construction site in Bel Air earlier yesterday, the pregnant film star prompted rumours that she could be about to upgrade her homes as she prepares for the birth of her first child with husband Jim Toth. Reese Witherspoon Wallpaper 3. Another possibility is that she is planning to invest in Real Estate as the size of her family increases. The Walk The Line star already has a country ranch in Ojai, California, and a home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, among her properties. With her blonde hair pulled back in a ponytail, this time she spiced things up in a burnt orange cardigan and covering her toes with brown pumps. On top of possibly moving home, Reese is juggling taking care of Ava, 12, and Deacon, eight, her kids with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe. People Magazine is reporting that the star and her partner, who were guests at last week's White House Correspondents’ dinner, enjoyed a triple date following the proceedings. Apparently they teamed up with actress Kate Hudson and her musician fiancĂ© Matt Bellamy as well as swimsuit model Kate Upton and a talent agent, to skip parties leading up to the bash and instead dine at a local restaurant. They headed to CafĂ© Milano in Georgetown on Friday night for three hours. A source told the publication: ‘They seemed to be having lots of fun.’ As awards season got into full swing, The King's Speech was the toast of Hollywood after scooping four Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actor for the movie's star, Colin Firth, and Best Director for Tom Hooper, while Natalie Portman fought back tears as she walked away with the Best Actress honour for her role as a tormented ballet dancer in Black Swan. It was a different story at the Independent Spirit Awards, where Black Swan trounced its rivals, picking up four honours including Best Director for Darren Aronofsky. In the world of music, Lady Gaga's incredible rise continued as she picked up three Grammy Awards, including Best Pop Vocal Album, but her achievements were overshadowed by country trio Lady Antebellum, who scored five accolades, and the shock win for Canadian rockers Arcade Fire in the prestigious Album of the Year category for their disc The Suburbs. Across the pond at the Brit Awards in London, Arcade Fire were again bathed in glory when they were handed the International Group and International Album honours, while newcomer Tinie Tempah crowned a triumphant 12 months by taking home the British Breakthrough Act and British Single titles. Rihanna was named Best International Female solo star, and Justin Bieber was named the International Breakthrough Act of the year. Away from the red carpet, it was a bleak month for My Name Is Earl actress Jaime Pressly, who was charged with driving under the influence after failing a field sobriety test, Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey, who was underwent an operation to remove a growth from her foot, Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who was hospitalised with a flesh-eating bug, and Dame Judi Dench, who broke two of her toes on the set of her new movie J. Edgar. There were also woes for Rihanna, whose raunchy promo film for single S&M provoked outrage around the world and was banned in 11 countries, actress Eliza Dushku, who broke a finger on holiday, and fashion king John Galliano, who was suspended and later sacked by Christian Dior after he was filmed launching an anti-Semitic rant at stunned drinkers in a bar in Paris, France. Rock duo the White Stripes stunned the music world when they announced they were splitting up after 14 years, and Lady Gaga's much-hyped new single Born This Way was unveiled to a barrage of accusations she had ripped off Madonna's classic Express Yourself. But there was good news for older music fans, as '60s icons The Monkees announced they were reuniting for a U.K. tour. Loved up celebrity couples Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, and Anna Friel and Rhys Ifans, both confirmed their engagements, and there were wedding bells for Kelsey Grammer - who married for the fourth time - and Mark Ronson and Katherine Jenkins, who both announced their respective engagements. Reese Witherspoon Wallpaper 3. Among the stars hearing the pitter-patter of tiny feet this month were Christina Applegate, who gave birth to a daughter, magician David Blaine, who became a first-time father to a baby girl, reggae star Zac Marley, rocker Rod Stewart, Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon, and No Doubt star Tom Dumont. Jude Law continued his unlucky-in-love streak when he split - yet again - from Sienna Miller, Iron Man star Terrence Howard was hit with divorce papers, Olivia Wilde split from her husband after eight years, and celebrity couple Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz announced their marriage was over.

Reese Witherspoon and Matthew McConaughey posed for photographers before climbing the grand staircase at the Cannes Film Festival premiere of Mud Saturday. Reese chose a glamorous blue Versace gown for the formal event, while Matthew modeled a sexy tuxedo. Matthew and Reese began their day at a photocall for the film before capping off their evening with a screening and afterparty. It's Matthew's second premiere since arriving in France. Reese Witherspoon Wallpaper 2. He hit the red carpet on Thursday with Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and John Cusack at The Paperboy's star-studded premiere. The annual festival comes to a close this weekend. However, if you're hoping to look back at the glamorous parties and fabulous fashion, we've rounded up all the hottest photos from Cannes! After we posted the news that Reese Witherspoon was pregnant back in March, we haven’t really kept a lookout for the actress. That’s all changed now due to the fact that her maternity wardrobe is stellar. It’s not an easy job navigating red carpets while heavily preggers, but Reese has managed to do just that with elan. This closing weekend at Cannes was her moment to shine, and gurl … she sparkled. She was at the festival to promote Mud, where she shares top billing with Matthew McConaughey. And newsflash: her belly’s got big! The picture on the left was taken during the day as she arrived for the photocall for the movie. We’d like the whole outfit in a regular size, please. Reese wore a black, fitted and ruched cocktail dress by Versace, complete with Versace sunglasses. We’ve fallen head over heels for her strappy fuchsia stilettos as well. The dress proudly displayed her baby bump. It looks like she trusted the brand for her entire trip to Cannes as she wore a navy, custom made Atelier Versace gown for the premiere later in the evening as well. We’re digging the royal blue color, the dual straps and the fact that it’s dusted with Swarovski crystals. We’re totally going to keep an eye put for more of her fashionable outings for the rest of her nine months. It's been an incredible year in the world of showbiz, with the usual headline-grabbing antics, scandal, sleaze, celebrity births, star weddings, and bitter break-ups. Here, WENN takes a look back at the first six months of 2011. The new year began with wedding bells for many couples including singer Shania Twain, who married her fiance Frederic Thiebaud in Puerto Rico on New Year's Day, while country star Kellie Pickler and actress Valerie Bertinelli also walked down the aisle on 1 January. Reese Witherspoon Wallpaper 2. The new year brought baby news for a number of celebrity couples - Orlando Bloom and his wife Miranda Kerr became first-time parents with the birth of their son Flynn. Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem also welcomed a son, and Owen Wilson became a father just days after he announced his girlfriend's pregnancy. Nicole Kidman also hit headlines when she and her husband Keith Urban revealed they welcomed a daughter called Faith via a surrogate mother over the holidays. There was also pregnancy news for actress Kate Hudson, who announced she was expecting a baby with Muse rocker Matt Bellamy, as well as Marion Cotillard, Jewel, Selma Blair and Victoria Beckham, who confirmed she was pregnant with her fourth child. However, the first few weeks of 2011 also brought a slew of celebrity splits - Keira Knightley ended her longtime romance with actor Rupert Friend, Shakira parted ways with Antonio de la Rua, her boyfriend of more than 10 years, and Mila Kunis and Macaulay Culkin separated after eight years together. Many stars saw in the new year by addressing their personal problems, and a number of famous faces went in and out of rehab in the first few weeks of 2011. Lindsay Lohan and Demi Lovato both ended long treatment stints in January, while David Arquette, Backstreet Boys star A.J. McLean and his bandmate Nick Carter's younger brother Aaron all enrolled in programs. Troubled actor Charlie Sheen also admitted himself to a clinic just weeks after he was hospitalised to treat a hernia, and he later admitted he turned to booze to blot out the pain of the medical condition. Sheen’s rehab stint forced TV bosses to shut down production on his show Two and a Half Men. Another colourful character to hit the headlines in January was British funnyman Ricky Gervais, who managed to cause controversy during his stint as Golden Globes host. The comedian was condemned by organisers for poking fun at celebrity guests including Robert Downey, Jr., Johnny Depp and Tom Hanks during the glitzy prizegiving. The month held good news for veteran actor Michael Douglas as he was given the all-clear after a gruelling battle with throat cancer. His wife Catherine Zeta-Jones subsequently admitted she cried tears of joy when doctors told the couple the actor had beaten the disease. Reese Witherspoon Wallpaper 2. Poison rocker Bret Michaels also overcame a health crisis after undergoing successful surgery to close a hole in his heart. January also saw the loss of a number of great stars including Oscar-winning James Bond theme composer John Barry, and Scottish musician Gerry Rafferty, who passed away after suffering liver failure. The world of Hollywood was again plunged into mourning following the death of British actor Pete Postlethwaite, who died at the age of 64.
